We purchase a couple of different D series John Deere's and had to return them for either being not properly put together or not cutting properly. We settled on the D160 and it was adequate for about a year then it started to have steering issues (but the wheels were bent), a hard time starting sometimes, and it never seem to have any power to get up hills. I have a **2014 John Deere 3038e Compact Utility Tractor with a D160 Front Loader.** I use it about once a month for 1-3 hours at a time. I only use the PTO a few times per year to run the Bush Hog attachment. I'm guessing this qualifies as pretty light use for a tractor. For the past 10 years, the tractor received annual(-ish) maintenance that was funded by my parents (who probably didn't skimp on costs too much, but I don't have specific service records to know exactly what has been done). Due to a number of family and financial changes, **starting this year, it will be receiving THE BARE MINIMUM and LEAST EXPENSIVE maintenance** that is required to keep it running smoothly enough while hopefully still lasting a long time. I'm aiming for \[inexpensive/cost-effective\], but not \[bargain-basement, cutting corners at the expense of sacrificing safety\], and I don't feel the need to use all JD-branded parts—make sense? **So….I'm hoping I can do maintenance myself whenever possible.** I'm capable of changing oil and transmission fluids; I can probably change coolant if I watch a video or two about it first; **I have no problem spending an entire Saturday working on the tractor in order to save $400+ on work that would've taken a specialist 1-2 hours to complete.** **TL/DR: What needs to be done (preferably without involving JD service technicians) to keep my tractor running smoothly enough for the foreseeable future?**

This is my first John Deere mower and I love it. Just to be clear, it's an E160 because I bought it at Home Depot one day as a spontaneous purchase, but technically it's a D160 as that's what my local JD dealer lists it as. Anyways, that dealer is promoting a home service on the radio and they say it also includes a fuel pump replacement, among the usual filters and other typical stuff. I have no intention of using them because I like to do these things myself. My question is: is changing the fuel pump good normal maintenance practice on a JD mower? I've had riding mowers before, but I don't recall ever changing the fuel pump. There are a lot of kits on Amazon for the fuel filter that includes the fuel pump as well, so that makes me wonder if this is standard procedure. I went out and looked at my rider and I see it there, so it seems easy enough. But I'm perplexed as to why this would need to be done? Is this an issue with JD? Also, why would most (if not all) of the kits on Amazon include a fuel line shut off valve? I didn't see one on my rider, so is that something I should add to the fuel line to make any future fuel pump/filter service easier?
