Engine stalls immediately when PTO is engaged with 44-inch snowblower attachment. Engine appears to strain heavily under load and stops. No issues when PTO is not activated. Belt was replaced but problem persists.

I purchased a D125 lawn tractor in March 2017, The purchase $1955.00. I have less than 109 hours on the lawn tractor. I have done all of their recommended service requirements. in 2021 I started having steering problems. I took it to the local dealer and it’s going to cost approximately $450 to repair. I called John Deere‘s customer service explaining to them that I have taken care of the tractor,

I recently bought a property and the previous owner left their John Deere D125 there (the rear axle was up on blocks, so I assume the mower was broken and he couldn't fix it so just left it there for me to deal with) which I'm trying to get running. I put in a new battery and the engine starts up fine and sounds good, but the mower will not move forwards or in reverse. The drive belt seems to be running fine once the parking brake is disengaged, it just seems the transmission is not being engaged. I can push the mower by hand whether the bypass rod is pushed in or pulled out, so I'm wondering if the transmission is disengaged and pushing in the bypass rod is not engaging the transmission like it should. The bypass rod is connected to the arm properly it seems like (the arm moves when I push the bypass rod or pull it out). Would this point to an internal issue in the transmission? Let me know if I need to provide any more info. Thanks in advance for any help. **UPDATE:** After pulling off the wheel that the previous owner was working on I see that the axle key is indeed missing. Previous owner must've not noticed it slip off when he was working on that rear tire. And paying more close attention this time, I noticed that the axle does move, it's just spinning freely in the wheel. I ordered the axle key and I'm sure that will fix the issue. Won't get out to the property for a few weeks though, but I'll try to remember to update the post at that point.
