Known Issues
Transaxle failure reported on 2012 D100 garden tractor with only 150 hours of use. User states John Deere is aware of widespread transaxle problems affecting thousands of units but has not issued a recall. Friend's D100 from previous year experienced identical failure. Both failures occurred within 2-month period.
Solenoid failure prevented the mower from starting via key ignition. Shorting the solenoid poles directly allowed the engine to start. Issue resolved by replacing the solenoid and cleaning electrical connectors.
After performing an oil change, the starter lacked sufficient torque to crank the engine. Original starter began smoking. Replacement starter exhibited the same issue. High resistance to manual flywheel rotation noted.
RIO switch relay failure causes incorrect behavior when PTO is engaged in reverse. The switch operates in reverse logic - mower runs in reverse with PTO on without pressing the button, but shuts off when the button is pressed. Relay replacement did not resolve the inverted operation.
John Deere D100 - I bought this tractor new at Lowe's to use on my 1 acre mostly flat lot. It performed well for the first season. However the single pedal brake/clutch causes very jerky starts. Combined with a shift lever that only uses arrows on a pathway to mark gears, moving through the gears is akin to starting an old truck by getting it rolling and popping the clutch. The tires are very fragi
