I borrowed my neighbors tractor to mow about 1/2 acre of tall grass. While I was driving on flat land at maybe 3mph, pulling a brush hog, the front wheel drive shaft snapped. Estimate from the John Deere dealer to fix it is $5200 - 30 hours of labor and $850 in parts. Does this sound remotely reasonable? The tractor is 10+ years old. Is it possible that I caused this by doing what I thought was straightforward light duty work or more likely that I had the misfortune of driving when something damaged over years finally snapped?

Fairly new to the world of tractors so please forgive me if I’m asking an ignorant question. I recently purchased a new John Deere 3025E and one of the first accessories I want to purchase is a quick hitch because I’m told the most frustrating part of tractor work is hooking up the attachments. Having said that, the John Deere version needs bushings to reduce down to Cat 1, whereas I see Bush Hog and Speeco offer ready to go Cat 1 hitches. Would I be better off getting the dealer supported version even though it takes bushings or are the ready to use Cat 1 hitches that much better? Cost isn’t an issue.
